Top 4 Problems Starting an ATM Business (and solutions)

If you’re wanting to start an ATM business but want to understand what types of problems arise when
starting an ATM business then you’ll definitely want to check out this post.

The ATM business is a business just like any other that you’d potentially start. So, just as you could face problems starting any kind of business, well naturally you can face problems starting an ATM business. Right?

Hopefully this post helps you get through your problems starting an ATM business though.

Potential Problem #1

Not Having Money To Start Your ATM Business-

problems starting an atm business

This is probably one of the easiest problems starting an ATM business that you can fix. Seriously, I’m not kidding. The reality is that when you’re starting an ATM business you do not have to start by purchasing $40,000 or $50,000 high end ATMs.

Retail ATMs are extremely affordable. The ones I purchase (and have been purchasing for over 3 years now) are about $2,000. And that’s new.

Ok, ok you’re thinking “yeah that’s great Carey but what if I don’t have $2,000?” If you said that to me I’d tell you to think outside of the box. Ever heard of O.P.M.?

O.P.M. is Other Peoples’ Money. Use it. Family members, friends, co-workers, anyone that you know that has money they could lend you for a decent return. I promise that the return you would pay them is probably better then what they are already getting. This should be viewed as an opportunity for THEM and YOU.

Oh and one more thing….O.P.M. doesn’t actually have to come from people. Think credit cards, lines of credit, etc. Think outside of the box. But when you utilize O.P.M. do so responsibly and pay it back on time, every time.

Potential Problem #2

Picking Bad Partners-

Sometimes when folks decide to start an ATM business they will decide to partner with someone who is already in the business. This can turn out to be a major problem starting an ATM business.

Whether it’s just a money partner or a 50/50 partnership in other ways. You want to be careful who you partner with, even if that person is already in the ATM business and you feel that they know what they are doing and could teach you the business.

Ask me how I know? The guy who taught me the ATM business was not a very honorable man. He lacked something very important in a partner: integrity. This was my fault though for not researching him and talking to other partners he has had. We leave an we learn. The good news is….I managed. I learned the ATM business and I learned wayyyy more then he ever taught me.

In the end I guess it all worked out. So, just pick your partners wisely. Don’t just say “hey, yes I will put all of my trust in you because you’re already in the business and offer to take me under your wing!” Check ’em out. (Yes, that includes ME! But I’m thinking because I included this as the 2nd thing on my list for you to watch out for that it should be a giant clue that I have honor and integrity.)

Problem #2 Starting an ATM Business Solved!

Potential Problem #3

Not Having Contracts-

problems starting an atm business

Not having contracts when you start out could be a gigantic problem starting your ATM business. Why?
Well you could potentially lose business.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there are a gabillion people out there that are independent ATM business owners that will potentially steal your locations, but there are banks out there that may want to have their ATM there. And there may be other ATM owners that may exist. (Don’t worry though, the ATM business really isn’t saturated. You may want to check out my ATM Business Training Webinar above to learn why I can say that.)

You just really want to have your butt covered. Have all i’s dotted and t’s crossed with businesses that you want to place your ATM in. My very first ATMs that I placed I did not have a contract with the business owners.

But guess what? 1 of them in particular did soooo well that I realized real quick that I needed to get them to sign a contract because I never wanted to lose this location.

And you should also have a contract with a potential partner that you would get involved in. Big advice here is to have YOUR attorney review this contract for YOU. Ask me how I know about this advice?

Problem #3 Starting an ATM Business Solved!

Potential Problem #4

Not Knowing What You’re Doing-

If you have a mentor, coach or someone who is a partner that is already in the ATM business that is a great start. They could help you eliminate the lack of knowledge problem starting an ATM business.
Don’t forget to re-read Problem #2 above again though, ok?

Even if you found a partner in the ATM business to help guide you along, don’t you think you would feel more confident if you knew what you’re suppose to do yourself?

There is a lot of information out there on starting an ATM business. I’ve read and seen most of it. A lot of it is old and outdated or just crap that may be painful to get through. (This is actually why I created my ATM Business Blueprint home study course.)

Anywho, there is stuff out there so my point is that people (myself included) are making it affordable for people just like you to learn what you are doing in your ATM business, so you can avoid the huge problem starting an ATM business and not knowing what to do next??

How do you find great locations? What do you say to business owners? How do you find great team members to work with? How do you fill the ATM? How do you get paid? Plus a ton other questions that I’m sure you have as a potential new ATM business owner.

So, educate yourself. If you purchase the right ATM business course then guess what? You most likely won’t even need a “partner” that is currently in the ATM business to walk you through things. You will know what to do yourself and THAT my friend will keep extra money in your pocket. (A lot of times when you have a partner that’s going to teach you the ATM business, it’s a 50/50 split. So, basically you’re giving up 50% of your profits on machines they partner with you on.)

Keep 100% of your profits and learn what to do in your ATM business to start it and grow it all on your own. I know for a fact that with my ATM Business Blueprint course that you wouldn’t need a partner who is in the biz currently to hold your hand through your first few ATMs. You’d know exactly what to do from my course. It’s a step-by-step, comprehensive home study course on how to start and grow your own profitable ATM business. The cost of it is miniscule when you realize you’re not going to be giving up 50% of your profits to your “partner” who is currently in the ATM business and going to teach you the ropes. (You can thank me later hehehe)

Obviously, I’d love for you to become an ATM Business Blueprint member, but you don’t have to. I just want you to educate yourself first before starting your ATM business. This is a problem starting an ATM business that you can nip in the bud quickly.

    1. Not sure what you mean contract with your bank? You need a bank account for your ATM business and you just use the cash within that bank account to put inside of your ATM. Then when someone withdraws funds it’ll get deposited back into that bank account. Then you withdraw it again and put it back in your ATM, etc. etc. etc.

  1. I am having issues trying find a bank that will support ATM business
    do have any recommendations?
I am in Denver CO area

    1. Chris,

You gotta know what to see and how to have the convo with the banks. For my students I give ’em a list of banks that will allow ATM businesses but more importantly I coach then on HOW and WHAT to say during the conversation with them.

Good luck. For now, just keep trying.

      Carey

  2. Hi,
I am interested in ATM business, I have never seen anyone running this type of business in Zambia except for the banks. Can this idea be implemented anywhere in world?

  3. Hi Carey,

Hope I am not to late to the party. I wanted to ask about banks – I’ve found that the standard banks like Wells-fargo and the likes do not entertain ATM businesses. Are you aware of banks in Canada that do?

    1. There are plenty of standard banks that allow ATM businesses. You just need to understand how to have the conversation with them. And I don’t know anything about banks in Canada. Sorry.

      Carey

  4. Hi Carey,

Do I want to get into the ATM business? Odd question isn’t it. I ask that because I am considering pulling the trigger on one of 2 options – 1. An internet based, ecommerce/SAAS business or 2. ATM’s. Rules and regulations are always changing in the cyberspace world, not to mention many other pitfalls. Some are good businesses, some you have to watch out for. And the internet brokers will tell you what you want to hear and try to pressure you into buying, but at the end of the day, not really looking out for you and just wanting the commission. I’ve learned alot about the internet world since considering getting into that space 2 years ago. I have not spent nearly as much time studying the ATM space though and so I’m curious if it is any riskier than the internet idea, or are things pretty much status quo – no continual regulation changes, tax implications, etc. – just get a good, solid route and make money? Is it best to develop a route from scratch or to buy an existing route? The routes I do see available are not where I currently live so anything I may buy would need to be essentially passive in nature. So back to my initial question, Do I want to get into the ATM business? Thanks, Tom

    1. I have no idea if you want to get into the ATM business. That’s a personal decision.
I recommend starting your own route tho and not buying one. Good luck on your decision.

      Carey

    1. Learn from a mentor. If you were a student of mine you’d even have access to my iron-clad contract that you can just take to a local attorney to review for you. If you are not an attorney do not ever try to create a contract on your own.

      Carey

  5. Reading below noticed a comment that many banks are not accepting ATM Business accounts.
If you only share your banking with information with students, how much does it cost to attend or video webinar?
    Thanks

    Darrell

  6. What banks are accepting ATM Business accounts. I have been closed by Bank of America, Chase, a credit union and can’t find one that will accept my account.

  7. Hey Carey,

A buddy of mine and myself are looking into starting our own ATM business. I know a few very successful local business owners who would be more than willing to allow us to place ATMs inside of their high traffic businesses. My question is, are we required to get a business license before we start placing our ATMs? Or are we able to get our license later down the road?

Thank you and we are looking forward to hearing from you,

    -Noah

  8. Hello Carey,
Thanks for all the info delivered here.
Here is my question: do you know if it is possible to operate an ATM business without having to fill the machine with cash by yourself? I mean is it possible that someone or a company does it for you? Thanks !

  9. Hello, I am in a college class and I am researching before writing an essay may I ask you a few questions about setting up an ATM in a business?

  10. Hello again. I am trying to start my business, but I can’t get a bank to work with me due to the business itself. It’s considered a money services business and it’s extremely hard to open a business account with them. Do you have any suggestions? One of my problems is that for regular business accounts, there are limits on transactions. Each transaction costs 50 cents after that limit. Due to the high volume of transactions I will have with the money being credited to my account, I am at a loss for what to do. Can’t have a business without a bank account!

    1. Yes I do have a suggestion, hope on an ATM Breakthrough Session with me. All of my students that I’ve trained have been
able to open up bank accounts and listen to this very carefully are you ready? The ATM business is NOT a money services business.
Even some of the personnel at banks are clueless about that. And I know it doesn’t make sense since we have money in our ATMs, but we are NOT
      considered a MSB.

Schedule your call here. Have a great day and I’ll talk to you soon.

      Carey

  11. I submitted my email for the ATM blueprint home study but I have yet to receive the link in my inbox. I really hope this wasn’t a ploy to get my email address and I will never receiver the link!!! I was prompted that the link should be in my inbox but 15 minutes later….nothing.

    1. The ATM Business Blueprint Home Study course is a paid training program, so unless you paid for it, you won’t be getting anything.

The ATM Business Road Map is FREE and that should be in your inbox, check your spam, junk or promotions folders too. If it’s still not there, please feel free to reach out to me and I’ll personally email it to you.

May you live happily off of passive income,

      Carey

  12. I started 2008 everything good had bad partner got out of all that on my own I’m finding the bank is charging me more and more and wasn’t looking that close but started to realize something is not right bank kinda hideing charges and qustion them and it even gets worse they hold my money longer and when need it the most for week ends they don’t give all of it to me SO I somtimes run out and look like a fool it weren’t like that at the start watching them all the time and filling them bank or making it harder on me the charges against my accounts are terable keep going like this going down alerdy lost to spots over running out of money over week ends I go crazy when they are not working

  13. I am looking into starting an ATM business. I would like to start with only 1 ATM. The whole idea is a bit scary to me to be honest. But my husband is a disabled veteran and we have a young child. I need to make a little income while also being able to care for my family. My question is….If the ATM is located in a place that I KNOW will be used MANY times a day, and I only have a few thousand the load into the machine to start, how quickly will I be able to get the money back with the ROI to restock the machine so it doesn’t run out of moola?

    1. Hi Mysti,

The money that you stock the ATM with, when it is withdrawn will be back in your bank account within 24 to 48 business banking hours. And you just keep recycling that same money in your machine over and over again. As far your overall ROI and when will you recoup your investment back that you paid for your ATM…I can’t guarantee you that, but it should be within a year.

      Hope this helps.

May you live happily off of passive income,

      Carey

  14. I am looking to start a ATM business. All I have to do is fins a profitable location, buy a machine, stock it well and collect my ROI?

    1. At the birds eye, in the sky level, yes that’s all you have to do ๐Ÿ˜‰
It’s the little in’s and out’s that end up getting folks in trouble tho, so make sure
you learn what you are doing first. Nothing is just as easy as it seems. And if you don’t
learn what you’re doing, you may just end up costing yourself a lot of money.

If you’d like to discuss, I’d be more than happy to chat with you this week or next about
the ATM business? Just click here to set up a time to chat…there’s no charge.

      Have a great day!

      Carey

  15. I bought a ATM at an auction and I want to set it up in my place of business. Can you tell me where I can start. It’s for my customers use.

    1. Maria,

Unfortunately, you’ll probably NOT want to use that ATM that you bought at auction. I don’t know what kind it is, but
I’m going to assume it’s NOT EMV compliant and if it’s not and you put it in your business and allow your customers to
use it and then their info gets stolen and money is stolen from them, then YOU are on the hook for that. NOT what you want
      to happen.

I can help you figure out if it’s good enough to place in your business or if it needs to be upgraded or if it can’t be upgraded,
if you just need a brand new ATM. Please feel free to set up a call with me here. There’s no charge for the call.

      Have a great day!

      Carey

  16. Hey Carey,

I’m looking into dipping my feet into the atm business. But I do have one question.

I realize you make money from the transaction fee, but in the end you just have to stock the machine back up with money. Say someone pulls out $20 with a $2 fee, that puts you at $-18. So how are you making profit if you keep having to load the machines with cash?
I’m sure the answer is extremely simple but it’s beyond me at the moment.

    Thanks for your insight!

    1. Zach,

No worries, I had the same hang up when I first started. Actually, I even got started in the biz BEFORE getting an answer to that question. Dumb! lol

You’re going to be surprised at the answer. So 2 ways you can get your answer:

      1) Watch this video

or if you want to learn that answer and a whole lot more about the biz then..

      2) Register here for my live web class that I’m doing Thursday at 8pm Eastern.

Hope to see you on the web class Thursday night!

  17. I’m looking to start a new business by Spring of 2018..funds nor credit is a problem. I want to talk to someone about expectations, ie…how many machines would I need to place to make 75k-100k per year

  20. Hello,

I am working full time at the moment but am expecting a baby soon. I am looking for ways to generate income while working from home. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
    Thanks,
    Jenna

  21. Hi all. Is it better to purchase an ATM route with machines and guaranteed locations for $$ or try to buy the machines solo and get the spots yourself?

    1. Hi Jeff!

It really depends. There’s a lot of shadiness that goes on in this business and a lot of folks have been screwed trying to buy existing “routes.” But if you can get a real route from a decent, reliable person and the price is right, then it may be worth it? You gotta make sure you ask all of the right questions first and get all of the right answers. You’ll also still want to get trained for sure.

Why don’t you set up a call and we can discuss any questions that you have with both ways? Just click here to set up a free call.

      Talk soon!

  22. Im looking at the ATM as a business I can start up for a reasonable amount of money. I’d like to contract with local businesses and stay small enough to manage myself. I not looking to get rich, just supplement my retirement.

  23. I will be retiring in May of 2018 but I would like to get the ball rolling this summer by getting trained and acquiring the money needed for start up. I would like to start with one or two machines.

I have no clue on how to be a salesperson. So do you train how to sell my services to the business owner? Any training videos available?

I am employed with a computer industry so as far as maintaining these machine shouldn’t be a problem for me. I just need some initial one time training on maintaining these machine. Do you provide this type of training.

I have seen most if not all your YouTube video and find your suggestions and advice very informative. But most are few years old. Are some of these suggestion still apply to current standard?

How much do you charge for your service?

    Please replay thanks

  24. I’m living on a fixed income and looking to ATM’s so I can increase my income. Please send information.
    Steve

    1. Hi Ay,

I teach what the best locations are, how to find them and then how to have the conversations with the business owners to ensure they want you to place your ATM in their location!

      Carey

  25. I’m retired want to get out of de landlord grind;;;;;;interested in atm business. I’m also disabled, alittle, fibromyalgia……anyway, this seems to be my next endevour.(sp). need facts, and foils……thank you in advance, for any assistance.

  26. Good Evening Carey,
I am just in the investigating/educating stage of looking for passive income mainly for retirement. Having said that retirement is still a few years off, I am 47 and my husband is 49. Never thought of owning an ATM business until I read an e book about how to make money while sailing around the world. Owning an ATM was one of the suggestions. That is our goal, to sail, not necessarily around the world but to get away from Canadian winters, the Bahamas are more what we have in mind. If we can make it work, doing it sooner rather than later, even before retirement.
Sorry, maybe a bit TMI about us, just some back ground info.
I am very intrigued and would like to learn more. The internet is a great tool but if you don’t know what you are looking for it can be time consuming and over whelming.
I work for a credit union, we balance our ATM daily and load it weekly, so that is not a problem.
I am also researching Small Business Grants, seems like a good idea too.
Very excited to see where this may lead.
The 4 problems and solutions above are helpful….. there are numerous companies to choose from. Which ones would you recommend dealing with in Canada?
I have downloaded the ATM Business Road Map, is the Cheat Sheet something different?
    Sincerely,
    Tricia

    1. Hi Tricia,

The road map and cheat sheet are the same thing, just different names for them.

How awesome the plan you and your hubby have! I love it.

Unfortunately tho, I only share my ATM vendors with my students. Most of my students are in the U.S. but I do have a handful of Canadian students and believe it or not 2 Australian students. I only have U.S. and Canadian contacts/vendors tho.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help with companies to choose from, but you are dead on with wanting to figure out the right companies to do business with……the ATM biz isn’t really known to have all of the “trust worthy, supportive” vendors in line to help folks (but of course, when you talk to them on the phone, they all SOUND like they are the best thing since sliced bread!)

Have a great evening and enjoy your week!

      Carey

  27. I am trying to start an ATM placement company. I work as a sales rep for a company that leases merchants atm’s. We also do credit card processing and a few other services. I have decided that for those really good locations that just has owners not willing to lease, I’m going to offer to place them myself. I have 2
locations already and things look great. I was going to lease the machines, which in turn I receive my sales commission on. All looked good except for the leasing company we use says no problem on these 2, but even though my credit is great, the fact the business is brand new, the amount they are going to fund is much less than we expected, plus no leases in the near future will be available. Do you know of any leasing companies that handle atm’s but can see past the brand new business entity?

  28. Hi Carey, I’m interested to starting the ATM business between February and March 2017 and I don’t want to use ATM franchises. Problem no 1 isn’t there for me but, I’ve problem no 4. I can do accounting let’s profit and loss statement but I have no idea how the ATM business works when it comes to connecting with different kind of banks so people can withdraw from their respective accounts. How do you get these connections? Is it a software you have to buy or just ask banks to give you access?

    1. Hey Leah!

No worries at all with problem #4 or any other problem they may not even be on the list. Why don’t we get on the phone for a chat sometime this week? It’s free and definitely can’t hurt. Click here to set up a time to chat.

Looking forward to helping to clear some things up for you. I’ll also shoot you over an email. Have a great weekend!

      Carey

  29. Hi Carey,

I’m in New Zealand and wonder if you have successfully coached anyone from here and whether your system is applicable in this part of the world?
I have noticed some “unmarked” machines in private institutions in Auckland, which have no Bank affiliations, so there are obviously already people in the business here.
It seems there’s room for more as possibilities seem endless!
    Thanks.

    1. Claire,

Nice to meet you! I’ve never worked with anyone from New Zealand before.

As far as my system goes, the overall strategy within, yes, it will apply. The things that
won’t apply just like my Canadian and Australian students know, are the rules and regs type of sections and
of course, my American vendors. But when you get the appropriate vendors in NZ, then they will make sure
you comply with rules and regs.

I will send you a private email to explain more. Have a great day!

      Carey

  30. Hello,

I am doing marketing for ATM & CC business and we are ready to expand more, but I don’t know how to begin targeting our customers, we want to be in ads (magazines/newspaper) that go out to convenience stores/gas stations. Do you have ideas that could help me with that?

    Regards,
    Stephanie

    1. Hi Stephanie!

Unfortunately I haven’t got into that end yet. 80% of our leads come from referrals now. But I will be looking into ads probably this year or next so I can help my students more.

      Good luck!

      Carey

  31. HI Carey,

I just happened by chance to come by someone selling ATM machines on craigslist and thought it was a good idea, and here I am. I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and I think there is still plenty of potential here with all the tourist sites. I would like to know more about your course, can you please send me some information,

    Aloha

    Angelo

  32. hi.
I have some experience with ATM machines. I will like to have my own ATM business but the problem is, I don’t know where to buy the machines from. I live in Nigeria and I haven’t found any company who sells/ installs the machine. if you can kindly refer me to an ATM company with excellent customer service, I’ll be always grateful. thanks a lot.

    zinny.

    1. Hi Zinny,

Unfortunately, I can’t help you as I’m unfamiliar with any of the ATM rules and regulations for Nigeria.

Kudos to you for wanting to start your own ATM business tho. My suggestion is to start asking questions and investigating things within the business where you already have ATM experience.

      Best of luck to you!

      Carey

  33. Hello, my name is Bryan and I am interested in starting an ATM business. I am veteran but I still work and I am looking for other avenues of income. I would like to speak with you and have a little Q&A on the topic. Please feel free to email me start the line off communication.

    -thank you for your time

  34. I was told by a business counselor and licensing services that they don’t know what i’m talking about when I said can private parties operate ATM machines. Most of them said banks are only allowed to do business with ATM machines. i live N.Y and I went plenty places but can’t find help. Only thing I know is you have to form a LLC.

    1. Hi Jahquan!

Welcome! Unfortunately, most people have no idea that private individuals like you and I can own ATMs. Most folks think that only banks own ATMs and that obviously is how your business counselor and licensing services people think. That’s simply not the case. As myself and several of my students can attest to (some of which, live in NY!) The ATM business was de-regulated in the 80’s which allowed folks like you and I to own ATMs.

You’re going to need somewhere between $5k to $7k to get started in the business, just so you know. But I can totally help you. If you’d like, go here and enter your first name and email address and hit submit. The VERY NEXT PAGE will give you the opportunity to set up a free ATM Business Strategy Session with me. 35. Are the ATM machines changing because of the chip put into the credit and debit cards?

How do you get paid? Through the back account you revolve the money in the ATMs I assume?

    1. Hi Shannon!

Yes ATMs must be upgraded to accept EMV chip cards. But you can just buy all of your future ATMs already EMV compliant, so it’s not biggie.

You get paid from your ISO and your funds are deposited right into your bank account that you have set up for your ATM business. If you’d like to learn more about the ATM biz and if it’s a viable way for you to generate passive income then please by all means set up a free strategy session with me here. Have a great day! And thanks for visiting the blog!

    1. Hey Trevor,

Well it’s funny you ask that question. We are doing an event this weekend where we are providing a Surcharge Free ATM. And in order for us to make money, we charged the event hosts a set fee for us to provide an ATM with no surcharge that they can have for their patrons.

Hope that makes sense. So we got paid upfront (in this case weeks ago) to provide a surcharge free ATM for a day and a half.

      Carey

    1. Well Patrick, as long as you’re not wearing a Jason hockey and carrying a machete I don’t think you’re going to scare any business owners off ๐Ÿ˜‰

The whole process of approaching business owners is about you educating them for the most part. It’s not scary for them.

      HTH,

  36. Is the ATM business still a good idea. Considering a lot of people just use plastic. What do you think the NW t 5 years look like

    1. Absolutely it’s still a good idea. People have been using plastic for a longggg time. Actually a recent study showed that when asked what method folks prefer to use to pay for goods and services about 29% said debit cards and right on it’s tail was cash at 28%. Credit cards, checks, other method (mobile, etc) were way down the list. Then when you dive in a little more, folks 18 to 24 years old…40% of them prefer cash. And for transactions under $10, over 2/3 of folks prefer cash.

And when we talk about the ATM business we are talking about cash. Cash isn’t going anywhere.

For the record, I, personally, am not a cash person. I use plastic. But, I’m not in this business for ME. I’m in this business for all of the other people in the world that use ATMs. And one thing you should know about ATM users is that they are habitual ATM users. For most of them it’s not a once in a while thing, it’s a constant on-going thing.

So, even though I was long winded lol yes I think the ATM business is still a good idea and I think the next 5 years are going to be just as good as right now. The ATM business itself isn’t going anywhere. It’ll be here for your and my lifetime, my kids’ lifetime’s (yours if you have any) and probably even our kids’ kids lifetime lol If we want to think that far ahead. Any further along, do we really care? lmao It’ll probably still be around then, but I’d imagine they’d be a little more advanced and high techy, like the Jetsons hehehehe

      HTH,

      Carey

P.S. Some folks thought I was crazy when I started the ATM business in 2009. Thinking the same thing you said about a lot of people using plastic. Good thing I didn’t listen to them as my ATM business as consistently grown since then. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  37. Hi Carey,

I am looking for a business opportunity and think the ATM industry would fit my search. I’ve tried to obtain more info through the above sign up options but I’m not able to. My browser is directing me to “a webpage that can not be displayed.” Am I doing something incorrect?

    1. Hmmmm that sounds strange Tramaul. But hey, technology isn’t always our friend right?

Try to go here and add your name and email to get info: Free ATM Business Info

Hope that helped. If not, message me back here and we can connect via email or phone. My number in case you need it is:

    1. Lillie,

You can have an armored car service fill your ATMs. Of course, you’ll pay for them to fill the machine and most of them will require vault cash from a bank, and you’ll pay the bank for the cash as well. Plus, there’s usually a special lock that goes on your ATM that you’ll pay a fee for. So this is totally possible, it just cuts into your profit a lot and you’d want to make sure you have some well performing ATMs.

      HTH,

  38. This article is very informative and helpful for us planning to enter this business. Im not just sure if terms in condition is applicable here in Asia.

    Thanks alot.

    1. Hey Jam,

Yeah to be honest I’m not sure that it’s relevant to Asia either. But if you find out, please let us know here.
As I’m sure others would be curious to know as well.

      Thanks!

  39. Why does a Felony stop you from opening an atm buisness? Does it have to do with banks or something on those lines? If you have the money especially to open one

    1. Yep. It’s not so much the bank you’d have your account with, it’s more likely the sponsorship bank that works with the ISO. The banks are very concerned with money laundering and I guess they aren’t willing to bet on someone with a felony. Although I will tell you my guy that I recommend is willing to run someones info that has a felony to see if they would or wouldn’t get approved first so that they know up front.

If it’s a felony that has anything remotely to do with money I’d say forget it. Theft? May be almost close to forget it.

      Carey

    1. You just gotta know which banks will help you. Not as big of a deal as you’d think. Myself and all of my students with ATM business have had no issues opening bank accounts ๐Ÿ™‚

  40. i am looking into buying an existing business. looking for the good and bad. also worry about new emv upgrade. would like to talk to someone about this journey.

    1. Hi Rocco,

I’d stay away from buying an existing business. Or at least be VERY cautious.

EMV is not a big deal. I just responded to your email. You may want to set up
a strategy session so you can understand this potential journey a little better.

  41. Have pending contract with new mall opening up in september, looking for bars that accept only cash at their places.

  42. I have a Felony, it was from a gun possession. Will this stop me from signing a contract with a company who handles the networking on the back end of the business?

    1. Most likely David, but we could always try it. Worse comes to worse, you’ll have to have someone else on record that handles filling out the paperwork portion of your business (spouse? partner?, etc.)

      HTH,

      Carey

    1. Hi Sonja,

  43. Hi Carey ,
I have about 20,000 to invest and was thinking about doing an ATM business . I would keep my full time job . Just a couple of questions:

    1. Approximately how Many ATMs would I need to generate 100,000+ a year? I live in NYC
    2. Approximately how many hours of work a week can I expect to put into this ? ( I would not be picking up the money myself )
    3. Is there any way I could negotiate the location contracts online ? I’m quite shy, and also do not have a lot of spare time to pound pavement.

    Thanks for a great article!

    1. Paula,

Excellent questions! I was going to tell you that the best way to answer them was to actually talk on the phone. But I didn’t even need to as I saw you already signed up for a free ATM Business Strategy Session.

I look forward to our chat! Thanks for stopping by here!

      Carey

  44. I have chance to get into the ATM business in this way:

    – A person has a company that has many routes in many cities. Its becoming to large for him to manage all the cities and ATM’s. He has offered that I can take over one of the cities with 40 ATM’s and be the vaulter and cash supplier/manager for the route. In exchange for that I get about .60 cents per transaction.

    – So there is no investment required from me for any ATM purchases, no needing to get locations or contracts, and no risk of money of any sort. Because the only money is the initial supply of cash for the machines (and that is obviously secured as its only the ATM cash).

So I do not see any risk here for my money. Just for my time only to try and see if it is profitable. He has already told me what the route does in transactions so based on that my .60 cents per transaction would be a profitable route.

Does this sound like a good offer for me. Am I missing anything?

    1. That’s not really a question for me. It’s a question for your CPA and accountant.

Good luck though if you go for it!

      HTH,

      Carey

  45. I got plenty of cash to start an ATM business. Could probably by like 5 machines if they are still 2k a piece.

But I got credit issues. Is my personal credit score going to keep me out of this business?

    1. Hey Jason,

No bad credit won’t be an issue for you. It’ll only be an issue if you want to try to lease ATMs. The only issue that anyone could have that would keep they out of the ATM business is if they have a felony on their record, especially one dealing with money.

      HTH,

      Carey

    1. Hi Gary!

As long as you request the free report by entering your name and email address then it will get automatically sent to your email. If it’s not in your inbox, please remember to check your spam, junk or promotions folders as it hides out in there too! If it’s in one of those folders instead of your inbox tho, please add my email address to your address book so you get the free ATM info that you requested on a consistent basis instead of having to search through all of your folders for it.

  46. Hey Carey,

I would like to get into the ATM business! But I would like to know if you have a misdemeanor can you still operate an atm? I already have a business and I am thinking about selling it and changing into the ATM world. I have read that if you have a felony you can kiss your ATM route dreams goodbye. is it the same for a misdemeanor?

Also I found a business I would like to buy for 450,000; but only makes 136,000 in cash flow. Is this a great deal, or would you still start up your own slowly?

Im 23yo and I would like to talk over the phone or in an email. I am very serious in going into the ATM route!

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Andre!

Thanks for stopping by first off. I apologize for taking so long with getting back to
you but I’ve been traveling and then I had to find the answer to your misdemeanor question.

You are correct in that with a felony you can kiss your ATM dreams goodbye. That is 100%
      accurate.

As far as a misdemeanor goes; you should be fine UNLESS the misdemeanor related to money in
any way, shape or form. (In the future, let’s leave the misdemeanors for other folks tho,
      ok? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’d be more than happy to speak with you over the phone. I, honestly, think that’s the
best way for us to figure out a plan for your future ATM business.

    1. Hey Brandon,

Great questions you are asking. And awesome that you’re looking into something like this as a 23 yr. old.
I would start with BOA to be honest with you, they should be able to help you.

As far your other questions I have to tell you that you really should consider becoming an ATM Business Blueprint
      member.
The program was designed for people just like you with these types of questions.

If you’d like though you can start with a strategy session and we can map out a plan for your
ATM business. Schedule your ATM Business Strategy Session here Brandon.

Thanks for visiting and have a great day!

  47. 23 yrs of age looking to invest my money into the business. I was wondering who is a good bank to start with outside my personal bank BOA?

  48. I’ll tell you the BIGGEST problem I am having and maybe you have a solution for me. I have a route that I’m trying to get started but cant for the life of me find a bank who’s willing to give me a business account for this type of business since its considered a Money Services Business. I have 5 machines installed at 5 locations and cant get a bank to take my business.

    1. Hi Dominick,

I hear you there. I know a few folks that had that same issue. My advice to use is to just keep trying different banks. Small, local banks and the Big banks. Sooner or later one will click.

I’m working on a list of banks that will work with ATM businesses now for my ATM Business Blueprint members.

      Good luck!

      Carey

  49. Hi Carey,

I first want to say I appreciate your honesty and all the advise you are giving on your you tube videos and your emails as well as your website it has helped tremedasly.

I am just starting out in my business I have my first location lined up which was such a breeze!

My question to you is there a specific bank you prefer to use for your business accounts and why?
    Thanks – Linda

    1. Hi Linda,

Thanks for the kind words. No there is no preference for a bank. I will
be adding a list of banks to my ATM Business Blueprint Success System in
      the future though.

You just have to work with a bank that’s will to work with you, because not
all of them will allow you to open up a bank account that is for an ATM
      Business.

Congrats on your first location! Now go get another one!

      Carey

  50. Hi Carey,
Thank you for your wonderful website and youtube videos, I am also grateful to have stumbled across your informative and helpful comments.
I am from NZ and this concept is still quite young, so I am finding it difficult to get the answers that I am looking for in starting an ATM business. Here in NZ, Independent ATM machines are more commonly used for leasing as oppose to owning them out right. And of course I would prefer to own them to maximise my profits. I did come across a company in Australia who was selling their ATM machines from about $21k NZdollars, which I think is quite high. And to see that you have brought new ones for only about $2k is amazing. Do you think I could aquire the same priced ATM machines that would be compliant in NZ?
Thank you in advance for your assistance ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi Jay,

1st thank you for all of the kind words.. I’m glad
you found the information available useful and I’m
glad you found me and my site/videos.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer for you as far
as buying a $2,000 ATM in New Zealand.

I will tell you that I have Canadian students and
Australian, but mostly U.S. I’m learning more
and more about more countries and will update
the course in the future to reflect more country
specific info as I receive it.

I would say to keep doing more research on
google for different suppliers. By the way,
just in case you were wondering….the “plan”
or overall blueprint in the ATM Business Blueprint
Success System will work for any place that has
independent ATM operators, it’s just that you would
have to learn your own countries rules and regs and
I teach you how to do that with the system as well.

      Does that make sense?

      Have a great day!

      Carey

  51. Hi Carey I watched your YouTube videos and got a lot out of them thankyou.!! Can you tell me where and how to get contracts written up?

    1. Hey Dave!

I’m glad you got a lot out of my videos. You’re welcome!

As far as contracts go you will want to do 1 of 2 things:

      1) Hire a competent lawyer in your area to draw up entirely
new contracts for your ATM Business.

      or

      2) Become an ATM Business Blueprint member. As an ATM Business
Blueprint member I give you all of my contracts and forms that I
use in my everyday ATM business.
I still would recommend you take
them and have a competent attorney in your area review them. But
having an attorney REVIEW your contracts vs. researching and drawing
up entirely new contracts is a whole lot more inexpensive and time
      saving.

      Hope this helps!

      Carey
      new

  52. Hi Carey,

so you said you need 2K to buy a machine, how much do you need total in order to start running one machine including filling and refilling cash

    thx
    tarek

    1. Hi Tarek,

I’d say $4k can get you a complete set up of an ATM with all equipment, some cash to put inside, some marketing stickers, etc.

      Hope this helps!

      Carey

  53. Carey,

Very informative page!!! I greatly appreciate you taking your time out to share this information…How much is the “atm business road map?” I am thoroughly interested in started this ‘outside of the box’ business; mainly because in the past I have been a consistent user of atm’s. But for some strange reason, I just thought to be on the business side instead of the consumer side. When I live in Florida ( I won’t say the city, to protect the innocent and the guilty) I swiped at an atm before and I didn’t receive any cash but it took my 2 dollar fee. I thought I’d made a mistake but it happened again. So, I called the number and I never received a call back. Only than did I realize that these machines were privately owned in a major retail chain. Now is my time I AM READY!!!!

    1. Hi Morgan!

Welcome! Thank you so much for the compliment. I appreciate it.
I’m glad that you enjoy the information.

The ATM Business Road Map is 100% free. You can get the ATM
Business Road Map and Cheat sheet here:

      http://www.atmbusinessblueprint.com

Just enter your name and email addy and it will be sent to you
      automatically.

ATM Business Blueprint is my online home study course. That is
where I walk you through step by step how to start and grow a
profitable ATM business. That is not free. ๐Ÿ™‚ You’ll learn
more about it if grab the road map and cheat sheet tho!

Btw, for the incidents that happened to you, there should be
a “bank sponsor” name or phone number somewhere on the ATM.

If not, you can call your bank and see if they can help you.

And I’m sooo happy that you just said NOW is your time. Because
you are the only one that can decide IF it’s your time and IF
      you are ready.

Congrats and I can’t wait to see what you will do now that you
      know you are ready!

      Carey

  54. Hi Carey,
Great job on all the info you’ve given. Thnx. Heres my question. Ifound a used atm on line
very cheap, but in need of upgrades( didnt know upgrades were necessary) (upgrade kit was$750.00). How often would my atms need upgrades? Who does them? &can I use 1 upgrade kit on all of my atms (if I had, 5 atms)? I know ur answer will begreat thnxin advance. Ques.# 2. What is ada compliant?

    1. Thanks Ang! Ang, I gotta be honest, I wouldn’t buy a
      used ATM online at all.

My feeling is, you don’t know 100% what you’re getting in to.

And you need to make darn sure your ATM is 100% compliant.

Plus, you can buy new ATMs for about 2k….so you already are
talking about $750 on an upgrade kit, then you’re paying for
the ATM (even if it’s cheap) then you’re probably gonna have to
pay someone to upgrade the machine…..might as well just save
all of the aggravation and get a new machine that IS compliant
and comes with a warranty. Just my .02 though.

ADA compliant is the Americans with Disabilities Act. There are
all kinds of ways you need to make sure your ATM is compliant
so you don’t get in BIGGG trouble (we’re talking big money fines
here.) ADA compliancy is just 1 of the ways.

The machine has to be a certain height, has to have a voice system
set up so that blind folks can just plug in headphones and
hear what they are suppose to do. Plus, you have to have braille
somewhere on the ATM so they know where they can access the headphone
      jack, etc.

      Hope this helps.

Btw, if interested, I’m running a birthday special on my ATM Business
Blueprint course today. It ends at midnight tonite. 25% off of the
course. I go over ALL of this in the course (and recommend what
ATMs to buy. Of course, you can buy whatever you want tho lol)

If interested just go to my products page, click order ATM Business
Blueprint now and enter code: BDAY2012

Your 25% discount will be calculated automatically at checkout.

Thanks for stopping by. Great questions by the way!

      Carey

  55. Wow, you really do provide great information and I am glad you took the time to answer my questions. Do you recommend a certain ATM model? And how do I “opt-in” for information? I did receive the blueprint, thanks!

    1. Hantle, Tranax, Hyosung…all good. We use ’em all. (Hantle/Tranax pretty much the same.)

I think you already opted in?? If you have ATM Business Road Map and ATM Business Blueprint cheat sheet…then you are good to go.

I don’t think you actually have the ATM Business Blueprint course itself…I’d see ya in the members area if ya did ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Carey

  56. I am glad I stumbled across your site. I almost purchased an ATM route through AFCN who is a franchiser of the ATM business but decided that doing it on my own would be a lot better.

A few concerns that me and my partner have are these: Contracts. Kickbacks. Locations.

Did you hire an attorney to write up the contract for the owners to fill out? How long of a contract do they typically feel comfortable signing? And why do they feel the need to sign a contract anyway?

What kind of “kickback” do you give to the business owner? Does it depend on the contract? And is this something that automatically can go into their account?

What is the best way to get a meeting with a business owner? Email? Phone? And what is your biggest selling point?

I can’t wait to show my friends this site and I really appreciate your time!

    Matt

    1. Hi Matt,

Welcome! I’m glad that you stumbled upon my site too. I think you may
have just instantly put some extra passive income in your pocket instead
      of ACFN’s ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, I hired an attorney for my contracts. I provide all of my contracts
and forms in the ATM Business Blueprint course, however I do advise folks
to have a competent attorney from their area review everything. (That’s much
cheaper then having an attorney draw stuff up for you from scratch.)

I have a site that signed up for 5 yrs and most others are 1 yr. It’s just
a matter of how comfortable you are at connecting with the owner.

I pitch the contract as a way for us BOTH to make sure this is something we
want to do. I like a 90 day period to make sure that I want to leave my ATM
      there.

I started out not negotiating any profit sharing with owners and I did just fine.
Now, I pitch it right from the jump and I teach folks how they can pay the business
owners some profit sharing and not cut into their OWN profit that they were counting on.

That works with 99% of locations. Niche locations, you’ll probably give a little more
      in the profit sharing department.

No, it does not automatically go into their bank account….we cut ’em a check every month.

Best way to get a meeting…. ask ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m an “in person” kind of person, but I’ve gotten
meetings in person and via the phone. Never tried through email.

My biggest selling point is me. Really….I sell them on why me, as a small, local, company
is better. It’s all about using your personality and letting them know what’s in it for THEM.

      Hope this helps,

      Carey

P.S. Did you opt-in for your free info, yet?

  57. Carey,

Awesome info! I have been strongly considering the ATM business as another income stream and your post has practically eliminated most (not all) of my concerns. Thanks for providing well thought out responses to questions I and others are likely to have.

    1. RC, I’m glad that you liked the info. I’m glad it was able to help you
out with some of your concerns about the ATM business.

What are some of the others that you may have?

      Carey

    1. It’s my pleasure David. I’ve pretty much committed all of those errors,
so if I can help someone avoid them, then this post is totally worth it
      to me to have posted.

      Carey
